How to Get Through December Without Undoing Your Year

Six weeks of December can undo nine months of work, or cost you almost nothing. The difference is a plan made in October.

How to avoid December weight gain is a question worth asking in October rather than on the second of January. The South African festive season runs long, from early December work functions through the holidays and well into the new year, and it is the stretch that quietly undoes most of the year's progress.

Aim to maintain, not to lose

Trying to run a deficit through December sets up a fight you will probably lose and feel bad about. Switching deliberately to maintenance is a much better target. Holding your weight across six weeks of holidays is a genuine win, and it means January starts from where October ended rather than three kilograms behind it.

Protect the training, loosen the diet

If something has to give, let it be dietary precision rather than training. Two sessions a week through December is enough to hold most of your strength and muscle, and training tends to anchor the rest of your habits. People who stop training entirely in December usually find it much harder to restart than people who kept a reduced schedule going.

A December plan that survives contact with reality

Decide now, while nothing is on the calendar yet.

  • Switch the goal to maintenance from the first week of December
  • Commit to two training sessions a week, even short ones, while away
  • Keep protein and daily steps roughly normal, let everything else flex
  • Pick which events are worth a big meal and eat normally around the rest
  • Plan the restart date in January now, so it is a decision rather than a mood

Frequently asked questions

  • How much weight do people typically gain over the holidays? Studies suggest around half a kilogram to a kilogram on average, though the issue is that much of it is never lost again.
  • Should I diet hard in November to buy room? No. That usually leads to a bigger rebound rather than a buffer.
  • What if I am travelling with no gym? Bodyweight sessions and walking are plenty to hold what you have for a few weeks.
