Is Biltong Actually a Good Protein Snack?

Biltong gets treated as the perfect high protein snack. Mostly deserved, with two caveats worth knowing about.

Is biltong a good protein snack is one of the few nutrition questions where the popular answer is broadly right. Biltong is genuinely protein dense, shelf stable and convenient, which is a rare combination. There are two caveats worth knowing before it becomes a daily habit.

The protein case

Because biltong is dried, the protein is concentrated. A fifty gram portion of lean biltong typically delivers somewhere around twenty five to thirty grams of protein, which makes it comparable to a chicken breast in a packet you can keep in a bag. For anyone struggling to hit a daily protein target around a busy schedule, that is a real advantage.

The two caveats

Sodium is the first. Biltong is cured with salt, and a large portion can carry a substantial share of a day's sodium, which matters if you have been told to watch your blood pressure. The second is that drying makes it easy to eat a lot without noticing. A bag feels like a snack but can carry the calories of a meal, and fattier cuts and droewors are higher again because of the fat content.

How to use it well

Treat it as a protein source rather than something to graze on.

  • Choose lean biltong over fatty cuts or droewors when protein per calorie is the goal
  • Portion it into a bowl rather than eating from the bag
  • Watch total sodium across the day if you eat it often
  • Use it to fill a genuine gap, such as a long day with no proper lunch
  • Pair it with fruit or vegetables so the snack is not only cured meat

Frequently asked questions

  • Is biltong better than a protein bar? Usually yes on protein per calorie and on ingredient quality, though bars are often lower in sodium.
  • Is droewors as good? It is tastier to many people but considerably fattier, so the protein per calorie is lower.
  • Can I eat biltong every day? For most healthy people a sensible daily portion is fine. Sodium is the thing to keep an eye on rather than the meat itself.
