How to work out during load shedding is a genuinely South African training problem, and it breaks more training streaks than sore knees ever will. The gym is dark, the treadmill is off, and by the time power returns the evening is gone.
Plan around the schedule, not against it
The most useful habit is checking the schedule on a Sunday and placing your sessions where the power will be on. For most people that means shifting one or two sessions to mornings in a heavy week. It sounds obvious, but the people who stay consistent through a stage four week are almost always the ones who looked at the schedule in advance rather than discovering the problem at six in the evening.
A home session that actually works
You do not need equipment to get a useful session. Bodyweight training with slow tempos and short rest produces real stimulus, particularly for someone who is not an advanced lifter. Push ups, split squats, lunges, glute bridges and planks cover most of the body, and adding a backpack with books handles the loading problem for a surprisingly long time.
The load shedding fallback session
Keep one of these in your back pocket so a dark evening becomes a thirty minute session rather than a skipped one.
- Push ups, three sets to two reps short of failure
- Split squats, three sets of ten to twelve each leg
- Glute bridges or single leg hip thrusts, three sets of fifteen
- Plank and side plank, three rounds of thirty to forty five seconds
- Finish with ten minutes of brisk walking outside while it is still light
Frequently asked questions
- Can bodyweight training build muscle? Yes, particularly in the first year or two, as long as you take sets close to failure and progress the difficulty.
- Is it worth buying equipment for load shedding weeks? A set of resistance bands and one adjustable dumbbell covers almost everything and costs far less than a month of gym fees.
- Will a few disrupted weeks set me back? Not meaningfully, provided you keep doing something. The real cost is when disruption turns into stopping entirely.
